Stretching forwards and downwards in the loosening up phase.

The warm-up prepares the horse for the work phase.

The main phases of a training session are:

1. Loosening up

2. Working phase

3. Relaxation

They consist of:

1. At least 10 minutes in walk on a long rein, which can include walking over cavalletti, 15–20 minutes loosening up in trot and canter, working around the fences. Riding over cavalletti in trot is super-loosening work.

2. About 10–20 minutes jumping (gymnastic jumping exercises, building up the work step by step). Riding dressage in between, or having short breaks in walk depending on the ground conditions and the temperament and training level of the horse. The total time spent riding over cavalletti or small jumps should be no more than 15 minutes. The rider should learn to recognise when the work phase should come to an end, and the relaxation phase begin.
